Obtaining a Residence Permit in Montenegro

What is a Boravak and Why Do You Need It?

A Boravak is a temporary residence permit (TRP) in Montenegro that allows foreign nationals to legally reside in the country for a specified period. This status is essential if you plan to live, work, study, or conduct business in Montenegro for an extended time. Obtaining a Boravak is a necessary step for a comfortable stay in the country, requiring a complete set of documents in compliance with local regulations.

On What Grounds Can You Obtain a Boravak?

A temporary residence permit in Montenegro can be granted based on the following:

Employment – If you have secured a job in Montenegro.
Family Reunification – For family members wishing to join their spouse or children residing in Montenegro.
Business Registration – For entrepreneurs who have established a company in Montenegro.

What is Considered a Residence Permit Renewal?

A residence permit (Boravak) can only be renewed if the basis for obtaining it remains the same.

Examples of Renewal:

  • You work for Company A and continue working there.
  • You have a residence permit based on property ownership, and the property remains in your possession.
  • You hold a family reunification Boravak, and your family status has not changed.

When is an Application Considered a New Submission?

If the basis for your residence permit changes, it is not a renewal but a new application.

Examples of a New Application:

  • You worked for Company A, but now you are switching to Company B.
  • You had a work-based Boravak, but now you are starting a business or registering as a sole proprietor.
  • You previously had a Boravak based on property ownership, but now you are getting a job in a company.
  • You were in Montenegro on a family reunification Boravak, but your family status has changed.

Important to Know!

📌 For a new application, you must collect all required documents again, including proof of eligibility.
📌 Processing time for a new application is the same as for the initial residence permit.
📌 If changing employers, you must apply for a new Boravak in advance to avoid legal stay issues.
